The ACT is a test used by many U.S. colleges for admissions. It assesses students in five areas: English, Math, Reading, Science, and optionally, Essay Writing. Typically taken in grades 11 and 12, the ACT helps students apply to colleges. The test includes four multiple-choice sections (English, Math, Reading, and Science) and an optional essay section. The ACT takes either 2 hours and 55 minutes without writing or 3 hours and 35 minutes with writing.

ACT Scoring Structure

The ACT employs a unique scoring pattern across its tests. While the English, Reading, and Science sections have four answer choices, the Math section provides five choices. Notably, odd-numbered questions in the ACT are labeled A through D or E, while even-numbered questions are labeled F through J or K, excluding I.

Each correct answer earns a raw point, with no penalty for incorrect responses. A scale score ranging from 1 to 36 is then calculated for each test based on the raw score. Additionally, the ACT offers a STEM score and seven distinct sub-scores.

ACT English Test

The English test comprises five passages, each with 15 questions. Questions primarily focus on selecting the most appropriate grammar and style or responses consistent with the passage’s tone. Six elements of effective writing are assessed under two categories: Usage/Mechanics (40 questions) and Rhetorical Skills (35 questions), covering punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, strategy, organization, and style.

ACT Math Test

Featuring questions of varying difficulty, the Math test includes approximately 14 pre-algebra, 10 elementary algebra, 9 intermediate algebra, 9 coordinate geometry, 14 plane geometry, and 4 trigonometry-based questions. The questions are arranged in a general order of difficulty, with some harder questions interspersed among the first 20 and easier questions among the last 20.

ACT Reading Test

The Reading test comprises four passages from different genres: prose fiction, social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. Following a consistent order, each passage is accompanied by 10 questions, allowing test-takers to prioritize their preferred genres first.

ACT Science Test

Contrary to its name, the Science test doesn’t assess specific scientific knowledge but rather reading and reasoning skills related to scientific passages. It includes 2-3 charts and graphs passages, 2-3 science experiment passages, and 1 or 2 passages focusing on conflicting scientific viewpoints, with the number of questions ranging from 5 to 7.

ACT Writing Test

The optional Writing test is taken if a college requires an essay score. The task typically involves taking a stance on a presented issue, considering three given perspectives on the matter.
